The Baseliners World Series run came to a disappointing end this morning as the Baseliners were eliminated from the tournament by the Michigan Bulldogs. The final standings will be out this weekend but it looks like the Baseliners will finish in the top half of the field despite the loss as will all 5 Virginia teams. Good show by the Commonwealth. Determined not to be eliminated, the Baseliners pushed back the Twisters defense with some solid hitting throughout the lineup. The Baseliners defense stayed steady from start to finish, keeping the big swinging Twisters at bay. With this late afternoon win, the Baseliners continue in the grueling Losers Bracket on Thursday beginning at 8:00am. The Baseliners must win six games Thursday in order to stay in the tournament! The Baseliners started the early afternoon game in a deep deep hole again! Falling behind 6-0 early, the game really looked out of reach for the Baseliners. The Baseliners once again regrouped (see yesterday!) with the help of some fan support and methodically fought back to a 6-6 tie in the last inning to force an International Tie Breaker (ITB). In the top of the tiebreaker, the Baseliners pounded out 2 quick runs to take an 8-6 lead. It looked like the Baseliners might pull off the come-from-behind victory but a mental lapse in the bottom of the tiebreaker allowed the winning run to score. With this loss, the Baseliners fall into the tough Losers Bracket.Tue, 7/21 - Baseliners 3 Indy Diamond Chix 2 (W)
A wobbly defensive start for the Baseliners allowed the Chix to go up 2-0 early in the game. After some quick adjustments, the Baseliners regrouped and settled into their game. Solid pitching and defensive play held the Chix scoreless for the rest of the game and the Baseliner bats came alive enough to erase the lead and go up by one going into the last inning. With the win, the Baseliners continue in the winners bracket of the double elimination tournament facing the Indy Voltage at 1:15pm tomorrow. Go Blue!Side note: All 5 Virginia teams won their first tournament game today! The Commonwealth is well-represented!
Mon, 7/20 - Baseliners 3 Charlotte Blaze 10 (L)
The Baseliners got off to a rocky start in the second game of the day, falling behind 4-0 against the Charlotte Blaze in the 1st inning. After settling down quickly, the Baseliners mounted a recovery mission and battled back to 4-3 going into the last inning. The plan was to hold them back and bat to win with the top of our order due up. Definitely a good plan! Lesson learned: giving up any extra outs on defense at this level has serious consequences. Oh well, shake it off Baseliners! Big game tomorrow at 4:45pm against the Indy Diamond Chix as the double elimination portion of the series begins!Mon, 7/20 - Baseliners 7 Mattoon Pride 6 (W)
The Baseliners jumped to an early 2-0 lead but the Mattoon Pride kept the pressure on. A few uncharacteristic defensive lapses by the Baseliners opened the door for the Pride to battle back to take a 4-2 lead. The Baseliners shook it off and rocketed back to a 7-4 lead going into the bottom of the last inning. The Pride refused to give up and scored 2 before the Baseliners defense shutdown the final surge. An exciting start to the World Series! Go Baseliners! The Baseliners next test is at 3pm today. Stay tuned!Sun, 7/19
Light practice at 11am today followed by opening ceremonies at 4pm. Lots of people here as you can see from the pictures below. 10pm curfew tonight and then off to the field in the morning at 6:45am for our 8:00am showdown with Mattoon Pride.
